\u2018Charmed’: Sarah Jeffery and Melonie Diaz Say Kaela\u2019s Powers Will Be \u2018Super Helpful\u2019 in Handling New \u2018Trickster\u2019 Villain<\/strong>
\nThose powers manifest in ways that \u201dwill surprise the audience,\u201c Diaz tells TheWrap<\/p>\nA new Charmed one has arrived. The season four premiere of The CW\u2019s \u201cCharmed\u201d introduced Lucy Barrett\u2019s Kaela, a young witch with manifestation powers. Those powers will be key in helping take down the newest big bad, according to series stars Sarah Jeffery and Melonie Diaz.<\/p>\n
What exactly are manifestation powers? Essentially, it\u2019s the power of seeing and creating. In the season premiere, we see that Kaela has a penchant for art, and has been drawing people and places she sees in her dreams (including Mel and Maggie). In some cases, her drawings even manifest themselves in the real world.<\/p>\n
Though Kaela\u2019s magic proved to be a problem for Josefina, who ate an apple that fell out of Kaela\u2019s drawing and then became a drawing herself \u2014 simultaneously creating a negative space monster \u2014 Jeffery and Diaz tease Kaela\u2019s abilities as \u201csuper helpful.\u201d
\n<\/p>\n\u201cYeah, in ways that I think will surprise the audience,\u201d Diaz explained to TheWrap. \u201cLike, you\u2019d be like, \u2018Oh, she\u2019s using it there. Oh my god. Brilliant.’\u201d<\/p>\n
That said, Kaela \u2014 whose full name is actually Michaela, in keeping with the M names of the Charmed ones \u2014 is clearly going to need a bit of convincing to stick around. She hasn\u2019t quite embraced her destiny as a Charmed one, but Jeffery and Diaz were excited by the idea of Maggie and Mel being the ones to help her through.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s just interesting because, in the beginning of season one, I remember, you know, Harry teaching us all of the ways to be a witch, and it\u2019s kind of now like the student becomes the teacher,\u201d Diaz said. \u201cAnd I don\u2019t know, I think it makes them feel like adults, and it makes me feel like an adult, like having a new person come in and be like \u2018This is our world!\u2019 And it just makes me feel like, wow, we\u2019ve been doing it and it\u2019s \u2014 I feel really lucky to be welcoming a new person in this world, for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n
And with a new big bad on the horizon, Maggie and Mel are going to need Kaela. According to Jeffery, The Tallyman is definitely going to be a long-term problem.<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, I think he\u2019s my favorite villain we\u2019ve had,\u201d she said. \u201cHe is very clever, and a trickster, and a fan of puzzles, which makes it hard to kind of pin him down. And it\u2019s kind of interesting that like, he\u2019s this threat that we don\u2019t even meet until later on in the season. But he has a very ominous presence from the get-go.\u201d<\/p>\n
Diaz adds that The Tallyman is strategic and precise. He knows who he\u2019s looking for.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe preys on the vulnerabilities of people, good people who have a lot of insecurities about the way they\u2019re living their life,\u201d Diaz said. \u201cAnd I think it\u2019s really similar to like, I don\u2019t know, a really bad person who gets a lot of people to do bad things. A cult leader or something. And I think those are kind of the most evil people in life because they\u2019re just like, literally finding the thing that like makes you upset and makes that worse.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\u201dIt\u2019s really nice to feel something different,\u201c Diaz tells TheWrap<\/p>\n\u201cCharmed\u201d returns for its fourth season Friday night on The CW, introducing fans to a new Charmed one. And, according to series stars Sarah Jeffery and Melonie Diaz, her arrival is going to bring the best kind of chaos.<\/p>\n
At the end of Season 3, Maggie (Jeffery) and Mel (Diaz) lost their sister Macy (Madeleine Mantock), as part of defeating the Whispering Evil. But, as they mourn her, the Guardian pops up to inform them that there\u2019s another Charmed one to take Macy\u2019s place \u2014 set to be played by Lucy Barrett \u2014 and they must find her. Maggie and Mel may be a bit skeptical, but for Jeffery and Diaz, welcoming new blood to the Power of Three has been a joy.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s been really great,\u201d Diaz told TheWrap. \u201cYou know, Lucy Barrett is a really positive, fun, loving human being off screen. And it just feels good to be around that. And I think you know, when you\u2019re on a Season 4 of a show, I think it\u2019s really nice to feel something different, it kind of spices it up and changes the dynamics, and I\u2019ve had a lot of fun. And I think the scripts really tell that story, too. You know, there\u2019s a lot of different characters and the girls are kind of dealing with their new relationships in a fun way. And I\u2019m having a really, really good time with her.\u201d<\/p>\n
So, what exactly is the initiation ritual for a new Charmed one? Well, off screen, it involved just consciously making time for each other.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe went to dinner, we made a point of like \u2014 sometimes when you\u2019re on a busy show, and you have all these fittings and everything, it can be easy to be like, \u2018No, I\u2019m too tired,’\u201d Jeffery said. \u201cBut we made a point of going and getting some drinks and just getting to know one another. She was coming in at season four. So we wanted to make sure that she felt like this is family. And yeah, we really are like family. It\u2019s been so fun. I haven\u2019t laughed so much ever.\u201d<\/p>\n
How exactly Barrett\u2019s Charmed one ties in with the sisters on screen remains unclear, and Jeffrey notes that it will take a minute to figure out.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s an ongoing process, kind of a trial and error,\u201d Jeffery explained. \u201cWe think we have answers and then we don\u2019t, and then we do, and then we don\u2019t. And when we finally land on the answer, which I obviously can\u2019t tell you, it\u2019s beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n
