Could there be a better time for a message of hope?
That’s exactly what Alyssa Milano’s new book aims to deliver (it even has “hope” in its title!). The actress joined E!’s Carissa Culiner and Justin Sylvester on Daily Pop’s Instagram Live on Tuesday to share what inspired her to write Hope: Project Animal Rescue in the first place, as well as provide some insight into what quarantine has been like for her and her family.
According to Milano, this book is the second in an ongoing series. Another is set to be released in October.
“Really, I wanted to write a series about kids in middle school and giving them the tools to change the world and to make a difference and to find their voice…but also go through every single element that young people go through while discovering who they are and what they believe in,” Milano explained to Culiner and Sylvester while video chatting.
She said these tools include volunteering, fundraising and “all of those things that I think are so vital to a society that we’ve kind of lost track of.”
The initial inspiration for the books came from Milano’s own kids, but also something she said she’s found in any child she’s met: “an innate ability, no matter what is going on around them, to hope for a brighter tomorrow.”
This, of course, is difficult for many to do right now due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak and the subsequent need to stay isolated. Like plenty of other parents around the world, Milano admitted to Culiner and Sylvester that she’s having “a tricky time.”
“I don’t know how much of the truth to tell them,” she said of her kids. “I don’t know how much to shelter them from the truth.”
On a lighter note, Milano’s extremely frustrated with the remote learning process—especially when it comes to the phenomenon that is Common Core math: “I mean, I don’t understand why we can’t just carry the one anymore?”
Now that’s a question that is likely being asked by moms and dads everywhere!

Actress Alyssa Milano called on President Trump to turn his hotels, specifically in New York, into hospitals as the coronavirus continues to spread across the country.
“Trump owns how many hotels in the US? And how many in NY in particular? He should offer to turn them into hospitals until this pandemic is over. We need beds. He’s got ‘em,” Milano tweeted Wednesday.
The Trump International Hotel is the only functioning hotel in the state, according to the Trump Organization website. The president’s name is attached to other buildings in New York, but they are apartments or workspaces.
New York City has been hit especially hard by the coronavirus, reporting 20,011 confirmed cases and 280 deaths as of Wednesday.
Milano has been an outspoken critic of Trump, most recently labeling him a “racist piece of shit” for calling the coronavirus the “Chinese virus.” The actress is best known as a 1980s and ‘90s starlet who took the spotlight in shows such as Who’s the Boss? and Melrose Place.
In recent years, she has become a vocal political activist and was especially vocal as a #MeToo advocate during Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings.
If you ask any Charmed fan what they know about what went on during the filming of the show, many of them will refer to the fact that it was reported that Shannen Doherty could be something of a diva. However, in a recent interview with Pedestrian, Brian Krause who played Leo, has downplayed how much of a drama this did actually cause on set. Krause has said that Doherty was always very driven about her work, and that sometimes she could come across as quite abrupt. However, he also said that there was no one else on the set that worked as hard as she did. She would also stick up for anyone of her co-stars if she felt it was needed. He described her as one of the family and said that all the cast and crew were devastated when she left. They all wondered whether the show would be able to go on without her. Ultimately, Rose McGowan was cast as a half sister that the family were unaware of, and the show ran for another five seasons.
When Doherty departed the show at the end of season three, it was rumored that she was fired. There were reports of a feud between her and co-star Alyssa Milano. The popular theory at the time was that Milano had given the producers an ultimatum that if Doherty wasn’t fired, then she would leave. However, this does not seem to be the way that Krause remembers it. There has never been any official confirmation as to why Doherty decided to leave the show, and according to Krause it was a surprise to everyone that worked on the show.
Charmed and Who’s the Boss? alum Alyssa Milano has signed on to star and executive produce Who Are You People, an indie drama from Paperclip Ltd, the company behind the SXSW award-winning All Square feature starring Michael Kelly. Ema Horvath, who was tapped as a regular on Amazon’s upcoming Lord of the Rings series, will also star along with Devon Sawa (Final Destination), Paperclip co-founder Yeardley Smith (The Simpsons), Peter Parros (The Haves and the Have Nots), and John Ales (Euphoria).
The project was written and directed by first-time feature helmer Ben Epstein, who wrote and executive produced the Netflix film, You Get Me, starring Bella Thorne. The film, which shot in Portland, OR, centers around 16-year-old Alex (Horvath), who runs away from boarding school to seek out the biological father her mother always kept hidden and learns the dark secret of her roots.
Siddharth Dhananjay (Patti Cake$) and Reid Miller (Good Joe Bell) co-star. Toby Louie, Jordan Foley, Nick Smith, and Epstein are the producers, while Smith and Ben Cornwell of Paperclip Ltd, Oscar-winning The Imitation Game scribe Graham Moore, Rod Cooper, and Irka Zazulak serve as exec producers.
Milano recently co-starred in the Netflix series, Insatiable and will next be seen in Quibi’s Farrelly Brothers comedy, The Now. She is repped by CAA.
In addition to LOTR, Horvath was cast in Quibi’s sci-fi drama series Don’t Look Deeper directed by Catherine Hardwicke. Horvath is repped by Buchwald and Silver Lining Management.
Epstein, who served as a writer and co-executive producer on the MTV series, Happyland, is repped by CAA, Think Tank Management and Felker/Toczek.
ICM Partners and attorney Tye Gonser rep Paperclip Ltd, which has an upcoming slate that includes the John Hyams-directed thriller Alone, and feature projects Gossamer Folds and Gracefully Grayson.

Alyssa Milano is rocking a perfectly purple hairstyle!
The actress shared a photo of herself looking almost unrecognizable on the set of her new comedy, “The Now,” where she’ll play a recurring character named Sarah.
Milano, 46, is sporting gorgeous purple tresses, which she matched with purple eye shadow, purple nails and a purple camisole. She completed the look with a septum piercing.
“Meet Sarah, the tow truck driver,” Milano wrote.
“The Now” is a comedy from The Farrelly Brothers, who have been behind movies such as “There’s Something About Mary,” “Dumb and Dumber,” and “Hall Pass.” The show will air on Quibi, the hotly anticipated shortform streaming service from Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman, which is set to launch in April 2020.
“The Now” is said to center around Dave Franco, who will play Ed Poole — a man trying to forget his past, not worry about the future and to simply enjoy the present. In addition to Milano, the star-studded show includes Daryl Hannah and Bill Murray, although additional details about the comedy have been kept under wraps.

Milano’s fierce new look earned plenty of supportive comments from fellow celebrities and fans. David Arquette reacted with a few fire emojis, while another fan remarked that she was giving off an old Hollywood vibe, circa 2019.“Wow! Natalie Wood classic gorgeous,” they wrote.
Milano has been keeping busy, both on screen and off. The actress is also featured on the Netflix series “Insatiable.” When she isn’t acting, Milano has also been a prolific voice lobbying for gun control, detained migrant children and women’s rights.
Alyssa Milano and Holly Marie Combs made “Charmed” fans’ dreams come true when they guest starred as two sisters on an episode of “Grey’s Anatomy” earlier this month. The special “Cast From the Past Week” installment of the popular ABC medical drama reignited the reunion conversation among those viewers longing for the Power of Three to set them free.
And Milano isn’t shooting down the possibility.
“I mean, Holly and I talk about ‘Charmed’ movies a lot, you know,” the “Insatiable” star told Access Daily hosts Mario Lopez and Kit Hoover. “Because they have the new ‘Charmed,’ which is on The CW, and it’s a very different storyline…”
Here’s where Hoover interjects to say The CW’s reboot, which is currently in its second season and produced by CBS TV Studios (the studio with the rights to “Charmed”), is “not the same” and Milano agrees: “It’s a different show and it felt like they were trying to capitalize off the name but not continuing on the storyline or the legacy. So it was tough.”
“But we have been talking about maybe doing some films for Netflix,” she added. “And so I think that would be really fun and I think it’s a great way to celebrate our fans that have stuck with us for such a long time but still give it new blood.”
Representatives for Netflix and CBS TV Studios did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.
Alyssa says that when she reunited with Holly for the “Grey’s” episode they “did not miss a beat.”
“It was like we were at work yesterday doing ‘Charmed,’” she said.
In reality, it’s been 12 years since we said goodbye to the series, which ran for eight seasons from 1998-2006 on The WB and later The CW. Milano and Combs starred on the magical drama as sisters Phoebe and Piper Halliwell, with Shannen Doherty playing their eldest sister, Prue, on Seasons 1-3 and Rose McGowan taking over as the third lead in Season 4, cast in the role of Paige, their half-sister.
“We had so much fun,” Milano says, looking back on “Charmed.” “I mean, you don’t take yourself too seriously on that show because we were battling demons every day in ridiculous costumes, you know what I mean?”
