Are things better once you reach the top?

Maybe in some situations but as the second season of the Charmed reboot is going to show us, being in charge is not all it’s cracked up to be. That’s where we’ll find the Charmed Ones — half-sisters Macy (Madeleine Mantock), Mel (Melonie Diaz) and Maggie (Sarah Jeffery) when we see them again for their sophomore season on the CW.

One important thing to know is the show has gone through a bit of a transformation in its second season with new showrunners Liz Kruger and Craig Shapiro (Salvation, Extant) and a bigger scale of problems that will require the Power of Three in a big way. And, yes, Harry (Rupert Evans) is also back and, as Kruger and Shapiro told us, we’ll get a bigger sense of who he is and get clued in on his origin story.

For more, let’s dive into our chat with the new showrunners to see just how different (and exciting) the second season of Charmed is set to be.

The Broadway performer is lending his talents to The CW reboot.

Where do we kick off Season 2 given the cliffhangers of the first season?

Liz Kruger: As you know, the Elders are dead and the Charmed Ones are essentially in charge. And though we all dream of being in charge at some point, the reality is that nothing quite prepares you for the weight of the world, and that’s what they’re going to be carrying this season. It turns out the events of season one have destabilized the Magical World, unbeknownst to them when we begin the new season. The Witch World is going to descend into chaos without the Elders protections and we find out that someone – or something – has put a target on the Charmed Ones backs. And that mystery is what’s going to play out in the first half of the season in a mind blowing way.

Craig Shapiro: From there, a lot of what we explore is a great jumping off point since this season is really going to be much more epic in scale. The whole tone of the show is going to be darker, moodier, edgier. And they’re going to explore the Magic World worldwide. It’s not just located in one place and there’s so much more going on than they understood in season one, in the Demon World, in the Witch World, and in the Magic World generally, as we meet all kinds of new magic characters along with demons and witches.

When Charmed returns this fall to The CW, there will be some significant changes. Not only did the series close out its first season with some shifts that will take the character on a different path than its predecessor, the 1990s/2000 series of the same name, but Charmed will also have new showrunners in Liz Kruger and Craig Shapiro to guide it along that new path. Now, it sounds like the show will be getting some new characters as well.

According to TVLine, while Alastair Caine (Craig Parker) was vanquished by Macy (Madeleine Mantock) in “Red Rain”, we haven’t seen the last of his villainous children. Their report notes that Season 2 will see the introduction of Alastair’s daughter who will come to town looking for revenge. This unnamed Caine daughter won’t be alone when it comes to new faces in Hilltowne, either. A “sexually fluid witch named Kat, as well as a sexy boxing instructor named Jordan” will both be making their debut.

As noted previously. Charmed made some big shifts towards separating itself from its namesake series during its season finale. By the time the season ended all of the Elders had been killed, essentially wiping out the “power structure” within the magical world, leaving the Charmed Ones largely in charge and with a completely different dynamic.

It’s an interesting choice to more or less cut dies with the original series in terms of references. While realistically there will likely still be some little nods here and there — the reboot’s “take” on the half-demon Cole, Parker, left with an open door for his return — gives the series a chance truly do what it’s promised since it was announced: tell stories of new witches in a new world. It may even open the door for additional types of magic, allowing the show to lean in more to the magical traditions of the sisters’ Latinx heritage.

“We’re new characters living in a world,” Mantock said at San Diego Comic-Con last year. “It’s a new set of witches who’ve discovered they have powers. I think it’s maybe a misconception to say it’s a rip-off. I saw somebody yesterday describe it as a tribute to [the original] and I thought that was quite nice.”

Charmed will return this fall on a new night, Fridays at 8 p.m. on The CW.

Demons, ghosts, vampires, necromancers – none stood a chance against the bonds of sisterhood. After the murder of their mother Marisol, sisters Mel (Melonie Diaz) and Maggie Vera (Sarah Jeffery) discovered they not only had an older half-sister – the brilliant geneticist Macy (Madeleine Mantock) – but that with the “Power of Three,” they are among the most formidable witches in the world. Having accepted their new destiny as The Charmed Ones, they joined forces with “Whitelighter” witch advisor Harry Greenwood (Rupert Evans) to stop the impending apocalypse. But saving the world is a tall order, especially when you’re not even sure what your place is in that world. Yes, Mel can stop time with the wave of a hand, but she can’t keep her girlfriend Niko safe – and is forced to rewrite history so the two never met. Yes, Maggie can read minds, but she couldn’t tell that new boyfriend Parker was a half-demon tasked with stealing her and her sisters’ powers. And, sure, Macy can move objects with her mind, but she still reels from being abandoned as a child by her mother. As if that wasn’t enough, Macy, it turns out, isn’t the “half-sister” after all – Mel is – causing identity crises for both Mel and Maggie. In the end, the Charmed Ones defeated demons (both personal and actual), prevented the apocalypse, and saved countless Hilltowne innocents…thanks to Macy absorbing “The Source,” the ultimate power that fuels all magic. The sisters and Harry are battle-scarred but stronger than ever and hoping that life will be a bit simpler now that disaster has been averted. But is life for the Charmed Ones ever simple? Season one ends with their family relationships intact but their romantic lives in flux…. Macy is mourning a lost love just as Harry’s feelings towards her surface. Maggie and Mel both face uncertain romantic prospects. And with The Elders now dead, the magical community turns to the powerful sisters for guidance. Seems the Vera-Vaughn sisters are now in charge. And this New World Order will be even more complicated than anything they ever imagined. Based on the original series, CHARMED is from CBS Television Studios in association with Propagate Content, with executive producers Liz Kruger (“Salvation”), Craig Shapiro (“Salvation”), Jeffrey Lieber (“NCIS: New Orleans”), Jessica O’Toole (“Jane The Virgin”), Amy Rardin (“Jane The Virgin”), Jennie Snyder Urman (“Jane The Virgin”), Ben Silverman (“The Office”), Brad Silberling (“Jane The Virgin”) and Howard Owens (“You vs. Wild”).

Charmed is conjuring up a fresh creative direction, thanks to some new people in charge behind the scenes.

The CW’s freshman reboot is switching showrunners for the upcoming Season 2, with married writing team Liz Kruger and Craig Shapiro (Salvation, Necessary Roughness) taking over for Season 1 boss Carter Covington (Faking It), according to The Hollywood Reporter. The switch signals a creative change for Charmed, which “is expected to lean harder into its supernatural storylines and less into the family dynamic” next season, per THR. (Covington was originally brought on to help creators Jessica O’Toole and Amy Rardin, a pair of Jane the Virgin writers who had never run a show before.)

Charmed — which stars Melonie Diaz, Sarah Jeffery and Madeleine Mantock as a trio of sisters who discover after their mother’s death that they’re all powerful witches — was renewed in January, along with nine other CW shows. A reboot of the 1998-2006 WB staple starring Alyssa Milano, Holly Marie Combs, Shannen Doherty and Rose McGowan, Charmed has averaged a steady 0.33 rating in the key demo during its freshman run, which wraps up in May.
