Kaley Cuoco was living her best life last year—at least according to fans of the former Big Bang Theory star, who watched the 36-year-old soar to new heights with her Emmy-nominated role on The Flight Attendant. But the reality for one of TV’s highest paid actors wasn’t as simple as it looked. After navigating a public divorce and realizing the potential downsides of an intense work ethic, Cuoco is setting a new path for herself.

It’s been almost three years since The Big Bang Theory—the CBS sitcom that made Kaley Cuoco one of the richest women in television—wrapped up its 12-year run, but in some ways it feels like a lifetime ago. Since then Cuoco has found herself busier than ever thanks to her captivating performance as flight attendant Cassie Bowden, a young woman with a drinking problem and a penchant for finding herself in sticky situations, on HBO Max’s comedy thriller The Flight Attendant.

In its first season, the series—based on the New York Times best-selling novel by Chris Bohjalian—became the streaming service’s number one show during its run. It went on to receive nine Emmy nominations in total for season one and earned Cuoco, a 30-year industry vet who executive-produces the series, her first Emmy nomination for lead actress in a comedy series, as well as placement on some of Hollywood’s most prominent lists, from The Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Entertainment Power 100 to one of Variety500’s 2021 honorees.

And from the moment Cuoco wrapped season one of The Flight Attendant to when she began filming season two last September, the 36-year-old has acted in two films—this summer’s Man From Toronto, opposite Kevin Hart and Woody Harrelson, as well as Meet Cute with Pete Davidson. She has also optioned the rights to two more projects through Yes, Norman Productions, the production company she started in 2017. Those include A Season With Mom, based on the book about a mother and daughter’s baseball-loving bond, and an upcoming limited series on Hollywood golden-era legend Doris Day, based on A.E. Hotchner’s 1976 biography, Doris Day: Her Own Story.

Cuoco has always been a bankable star; even before charming audiences with her sarcastic, witty portrayal of Penny on Big Bang, there was her role as John Ritter’s daughter on ABC’s 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter, plus a 22-episode stint on the WB’s Charmed. But it’s The Flight Attendant that has given her a certain cachet that until now has been fairly elusive.

Fox has opted not to proceed with a second season of The Big Leap. The ballet drama-comedy, starring Scott Foley and Simone Recasner, had an 11-episode freshman run, which ended in December, with the network at the time deferring a decision on the show’s future until the spring.

It is one of two Fox freshman dramas on the bubble after soft limited runs, along with Our Kind Of People, which I hear looks promising for a second season due to a strong showing on Fox’s streamer Tubi.

With its music, stage performances and aspirational themes, The Big Leap was a favorite of Fox brass during the development process and arrived with a strong pre-launch buzz, drawing parallels to Fox’s breakout hit Glee.

But The Big Leap did not follow Glee‘s ratings trajectory. Linear ratings were soft, with the dramedy ranking as Fox’s lowest-rated series this season.

Still, Fox brass liked creatively The Big Leap, which scored a rare for a broadcast series 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The network met with The Big Leap team to hear their Season 2 pitch before making the final decision.

The Big Leap was a show-within-a-show that took viewers on a journey of self-acceptance, body-positivity and empowerment at any age. It was described as a modern tale about second chances, chasing your dreams and taking back what’s yours. The show revolved around a group of diverse, down-on-their-luck characters attempting to change their lives by participating in a potentially life-ruining reality dance show that builds to a live production of Swan Lake.

The Big Leap was produced by 20th Television and Fox Entertainment. Liz Heldens created the series inspired by the British reality series Big Ballet. She executive produced with the show’s director, Jason Winer, and Sue Naegle of Annapurna TV.

Who’s the Boss?

This will come as a shocker for fans of the FBI franchise. Julian McMahon, star of FBI: Most Wanted, is exiting the CBS crime drama after almost three seasons. His final episode is slated to shoot next week and will air March 8. The show is expected to introduce a new character later this season who will fill the void left by the exit of McMahon’s Jess LaCroix, an “agent’s agent” and head of the team from the FBI’s Most Wanted Unit which is assigned the most extreme and egregious cases.

“Over the past few months, the producers of FBI: Most Wanted and I have had discussions about my departure from the show in favor of additional creative pursuits and the transition of my character Jess LaCroix,” McMahon said in a statement to Deadline. “These ongoing conversations have given us an opportunity to orchestrate a seamless and productive way for me to leave the show.”

McMahon also reflected on his time on FBI: Most Wanted and playing Jess LaCroix.

“I would like to express the gratitude and admiration I have had working with [executive producers] Dick Wolf and Peter Jankowski,” he said. “I’m extremely proud of the work we have done together and put the development of this show, and my character Jess, at the top of my professional experience list. I wish the show, and its cast & crew, the greatest success in the future. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to play Jess; he is a good man.”

It is unclear yet how McMahon’s character would be written off. LaCroix is now going through a major personal transition, with his daughter Tali, who has been his rock, leaving for a boarding school in Canada.

“We are saddened to see Julian leave,” Wolf said in a statement to Deadline. “His portrayal of agent Jess LaCroix has been a key factor in the success of FBI: Most Wanted. We will miss him and we wish him the best in his next chapter.”

McMahon made his debut as LaCroix in an April episode of the mothership FBI series, which served as a backdoor pilot for FBI: Most Wanted. The spinoff got off to a strong start in January 2020 and is now part of an FBI Tuesday lineup on CBS alongside the original FBI and newest addition FBI: International.

FBI: Most Wanted is executive produced by Wolf, Jankowski, David Hudgins, Todd Arnow and Arthur W. Forney. The series comes from Wolf Entertainment, Universal Television and CBS Studios.

Prior to FBI: Most Wanted, McMahon, known for his starring role in Nip/Tuck, had roles in Hulu’s Marvel series Runaways, BBC America’s Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, the miniseries adaptation of Childhood’s End as well as Charmed.
